AUGUSTA — Firefighters stopped a house fire at 283 Spring Road in Augusta this afternoon, the city’s fire chief said.

The report came in just before 12:20, and emergency dispatch reports said smoke was billowing out of the home’s attic. At 12:36 p.m., authorities said the fire was under control.

Augusta Fire Chief Roger Audette said his department arrived at a substantial fire around 12:15 p.m. Reports around that time said the house was fully engulfed by flames, but Audette said it only took firefighters about 15 minutes to put the fire out.

Audette said the owners weren’t at home at the time of the fire, and no one else was inside. He said there was significant smoke and water damage inside the house and some windows were knocked out.

The fire’s origin is unknown, he said.
