MANCHESTER, N.H. — Republican Mitt Romney said Monday that a GOP Senate candidate’s comments on rape are “insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong.”

Romney said he found Missouri Congressman Todd Akin’s comments “offensive.” Akin said in an interview Sunday that women’s bodies can prevent pregnancies in “a legitimate rape” and that conception is rare in such cases.

Romney said he has “an entirely different view.” The GOP presidential candidate also called on Akin to correct his statements.

Akin, who is running to unseat Missouri’s Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, issued a statement Sunday saying he “misspoke” during the interview. The statement did not specify on which points or comments.

Romney responded to Akin’s comments in an interview with the National Review.

Meanwhile, Sen. Scott Brown on Monday said that Akins’ comments are “outrageous” and that the congressman should drop his Senate bid.

The Massachusetts Republican said there is “no place in our discourse” for Akin’s comments

Brown is locked in a tight reelection race this year against Democrat Elizabeth Warren.
