A joint effort between Hartland Public Library and Palmyra, St. Albans and Hartland Historical Societies has resulted in a $1,000 grant from Maine Memory Network. The Maine Historical Society in partnership with the Maine State Library provides grants to its Community Mobilization Program, which is designed to help organizations — historical societies, libraries and schools in particular — use participation in Maine Memory Network to develop skills, build capacity and expand collaboration with local partners. The network is a nationally recognized statewide digital museum created and maintained by the Maine Historical Society.
A scanner, laptop and digital camera have been purchased and the goal is to begin an ambitious effort to digitize the history of the three towns. The intent is to use the equipment to incorporate pictures, documents, and memorabilia from the local historical societies as well as take this equipment into the homes of people who are concerned about the security of their items.
The three historical societies have begun the digitization process with each town focusing on a theme. The societies welcome questions, donations and loans of pictures for the project.
