The state championship Round of 48 boys and girls singles tennis tournament begins Saturday at Lewiston High School. Bates College, the normal site for the Round of 48, is not available Saturday, but Monday’s Round of 16 and quarterfinals and Wednesday’s semifinals and finals will be at Bates.
NEWPORT -- Nokomis Regional High School is looking for an athletic director again.
NEWPORT -- Over the past couple weeks, Nokomis has been winning softball games with its offense, and Medomak Valley has been winning them with its defense. When they met Friday afternoon, both of those strengths had an off day.
Maine Central Institute came into this spring off tough seasons in field hockey, girls soccer and girls basketball, largely due to the school's small pool of available students. Softball has been different.
SKOWHEGAN — Bob Witts, the new girls basketball coach at Skowhegan Area High School, puts a priority on having the community involved in the program.
SKOWHEGAN -- It turns out that Round 2 of Skowhegan-Messalonskee softball was just as much fun.
WATERVILLE -- Although few teams ever have that many for a given game, American Legion Baseball teams can field rosters with as many as 18 players. When Waterville held Legion tryouts a couple weeks ago, coach Eli Fitzgerald realized he would be lucky to get half that.
AUGUSTA -- Cony hit more than well enough to win a slugfest, and Sonja Morse threw more than well enough to win a pitchers' duel. As Skowhegan realized, it's tough to compete with that.
Shelby Obert went 5 for 5 in one game. Mikayla Toth had that game when she had a double and a triple. Earlier this week, Bonnie-Jane Aiken had a single and a double in the same inning. Emma Fitzgerald had two singles in that same game. Then there was the game where Kaitlyn Therriault had three hits.
WATERVILLE -- Less than five minutes to play in Colby College's NCAA Division III women's lacrosse first-round tournament game Wednesday night. Colby senior Lisa Hoopes gets a pass from Tess Petesch, shoots, and scores. Hoopes screams, raises both arms in the air, and hugs the first teammate she sees.
