A 21-year-old York man was killed in a single vehicle accident at 2:30 a.m. Saturday in heavy fog  at the intersection of Beech and State roads in Eliot.

It was one of two serious crashes within an hour of each other in Eliot.

Eliot Police Chief Theodor Short said Zachary Brooks was traveling north on State Road in a 1999 Mercury Villager van when the vehicle drifted off the left side of the road hitting a tree and a truck parked at a local repair shop before the vehicle came to a stop in the middle of the road.

Police said the Brooks suffered a head injury and died at the scene.

Police said speed was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation. Police said they do know whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. They have asked anyone with information to call Officer Brian Delaney at 439-1179.

An hour before the State Road crash police were called to a single car crash at the intersection of Goodwin and Frost Hill roads. A 1996 Jeep Cherokee operated by Joshua Genewicz, 21, of Amherst, N.H., failed to make a turn and crashed into and snapped off a utility pole that toppled another utility pole on the other side of the road. The vehicle then struck a building.

The vehicle was totally damaged and the building, under restoration, was heavily damaged, police said.

Police said Genewicz tried to leave the scene but was stopped by Officer Michael Grogan. Genewicz has been charged with operating under the influence of alcohol. Police said more charges may follow.
