The Barn Buddies program is designed to help feral cats, those that haven’t been socialized, or those who prefer little contact with humans, according to a press release from the humane society.

“When free roaming or feral cats arrive at our local shelter we often cannot place them because they aren’t suitable for homes,” said Hillary Roberts, executive director of the human society. “However, through our Barn Buddy program we are hoping to find community members with barns, stables, or other outdoor structures that would like to join with us to help provide a second chance to these cats.”

Those who adopt the cats will have to provide a warm and secure shelter and regular food and water, she said.

Cats in the Barn Buddies program will have been spayed or neutered and will have received a one year rabies vaccination. The shelter recommends adopting two cats at a time so they have a companion. A shelter employee on Thursday did not know how many difficult to adopt cats are available.

The humane society is requesting a $25 donation for each cat to help cover the cost of their care and medical services.
