AUGUSTA — City councilors meet Thursday to present a Mayor’s Recognition for Excellence Award to Le Club Calumet and to consider backing a grant proposal for the Maine chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

The mental health organization plans to seek a $98,000 Community Development Block Grant to train people with mental illness to help them better manage their illness.

Helping people understand their illness and how to manage it can help them maintain employment and stable housing, according to the grant application.

However, the nonprofit organization needs a municipal partner to apply for the funding on its behalf.

City councilors will consider doing that at their meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in council chambers at Augusta City Center.

Also at Thursday’s council meeting, Mayor William Stokes is scheduled to present the Mayor’s Recognition for Excellence Awards to Le Club Calumet.

Le Club Calumet was selected for the award, according to Roger Pomerleau, chairman of the awards committee, both for its long history of promoting quality of life in Augusta and for stepping up during the last ice storm to bring in its kitchen crew and volunteers on Christmas Day to open their hall to serve hundreds of meals to utility linemen who were in the area to help restore power.

The mayor’s awards started last year as a way to recognize people, businesses and organizations that make a positive impact in Augusta.

Councilors are also scheduled to:

• Authorize City Manager William Bridgeo to negotiate with the Greater Augusta Utility District for a 12,715 square-foot parcel now part of the city-owned former Hodgkins School property. The district is seeking to provide more room for a district project that will replace water towers on the district’s adjacent property.

• Consider two zoning changes: One to allow public utilities facilities in the Planned Development 2 District, and one allowing a Sewall Street home and lawyer’s office now in the Low Density Residential District to be used only as an office. The use as an office was previously allowed as a home occupation business, but isn’t an allowed use on its own. The property is no longer going to be used as a residence, so a zone change was requested to allow the office use to continue.

• Meet in a closed-door session to discuss real estate negotiations.
