Bangor named finish line for national race

BANGOR — Bangor has been chosen as the finish line for a nationwide charitable road race known as the Fireball Run.

Kerrie Tripp, executive director of the Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau, says the selection could mean as much as $100,000 to the local economy.

The eight-day, 2,500-mile "Fireball Run Adventurally Northern Exposure" will end in Bangor, but the rest of the race will be announced today. Forty teams are expected to participate.

Tripp tells the Bangor Daily News the race is a cross between the movie "Cannonball Run" and "The Amazing Race" television show.

Drivers do not speed, but go on a scavenger hunts, finding certain items and performing certain tasks along the route.

The race is also a fundraiser for the Race to Recover America's Missing Children charity.
