A Bath attorney announced Friday that he’s running for the Democratic nomination for the Senate seat representing Sagadahoc County and Dresden.

David Sinclair, 44, a Bath city councilor who opened a law practice in 2010 after a career in software engineering and technology management, said his municipal experience would aid him in representing the district.

“My years of public service have established a record of responsiveness to constituent needs and successful collaboration,” he said in a news release.

The Senate District 19 seat now belongs to Senate Majority Leader Seth Goodall, D-Richmond. Goodall has said he’ll resign his seat Tuesday to become the Northeast director of the Small Business Administration, a federal post he was appointed to by President Barack Obama.

The Maine Senate is composed of 19 Democrats, 15 Republicans and an independent, meaning a Republican pickup there would give Democrats the slimmest majority possible.

A former Republican state senator, Paula Benoit, of Phippsburg, has said she’s seeking her party’s nomination. Eloise Vitelli, a women’s business advocate from Arrowsic, announced her intention to run as a Democrat earlier this week.

At least for now, Sinclair could be fighting an uphill battle for his party’s nod: Goodall and House Majority Leader Seth Berry, D-Bowdoinham, already have endorsed Vitelli for the nomination.
