STARKS — A benefit dinner is planned Friday for a man who is slowly recovering after he was shot on his property by hunters last month.

Kerry Hebert, 56, has undergone multiple surgeries to treat extensive injuries. The proceeds are to help his family pay for medical bills and other expenses while he recovers, according to Erin Norton, a Hebert family friend who is organizing the event.

The evidence in the Oct. 31 shooting is still being processed at the state police crime laboratory in Augusta, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department. No charges have been filed, he said.

Hebert was shot in the stomach during a dispute with a group of hunters on his property on Mount Hunger Road.

Hebert said he has been slowly healing.

“It’s coming along. The ribs have healed up. The wound is healing. My lungs are healing. Things are improving all the time,” Hebert said.

He said in a few weeks he expects to be able to move around better, but it will be a long time before he is able to return to work.

“I don’t really know how long that’s going to be. We can guess, but the doctors don’t really know either,” he said. 

Hebert, a self-employed forester, said he has been able to do some administrative work while recovering and will hire other foresters for the labor.

He did not want to talk about the shooting.

Kerry and Jenn Hebert both said they have received an overwhelming amount of support from friends and family during his recovery.

“It’s been a very humbling experience” he said.
