SKOWHEGAN — Game wardens using a tracking dog found the body of an 83-year-old woman Monday afternoon behind the automotive section at Walmart on Fairgrounds Market Place.

The woman, identified as Shirley Woods, was last seen around 6 p.m. Sunday near her apartment at 341 Madison Ave. across from Burger King. She was reported missing Monday at 12:47 p.m., Skowhegan police Officer Tim Williams said. Her body was found about 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Williams said Woods suffered from dementia and apparently wandered off and tried to make her way back home when she lost her way. The apartment complex is less than a half mile from the back side of Walmart and Hannaford Supermarket, separated by trees and Cold Brook.

Game wardens had been sent Monday to look for the woman after she was reported missing. Williams said Woods’ death is not considered suspicious.
