BOWDOINHAM — A Brunswick man escaped serious injury Tuesday when he dozed off while driving on Interstate 295 slammed his car into a guardrail.

Kenneth Johnson, 50, walked away with minor injuries, according to State Police Trooper Christopher Rogers.

Johnson was driving his 2002 Honda south around 1 p.m., when he apparently fell asleep, Rogers said. The Honda slammed into the passing lane guardrail. The car caught fire, but was quickly doused with fire extinguishers, Rogers said.

Johnson was wearing a seat belt.

The impact destroyed about 50 feet of guardrail. Traffic was reduced to one lane for some time.
