NORRIDGEWOCK— A Chihuahua dog was struck by a car after its owner abandoned it along with a stolen van that malfunctioned near Ward Hill Road, according to police.

The dog, which belongs to Casey Rodrigue, 23, of Skowhegan, was left outside the van Rodrigue had stolen with her sister, Rebekah Rodrigue, 22, also of Skowhegan, according to a news release from Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster, of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

The two girls stole the 1999 Dodge Caravan in Norridgewock as they were leaving a late-night gathering on April 15 and trying to get back to Skowhegan, according to Lancaster. When the van malfunctioned less than a mile down the road, they abandoned it along with the dog, whom they left outside the van, he said.

The dog was struck by another car around 6 a.m. April 15 at the intersection of Ward Hill Road and Tarbell Hill Road.

It was taken to Meadow Wood Animal Clinic in Cornville and is in stable condition, according to the release.

Casey Rodrigue was arrested Saturday and has been charged with unauthorized use of property and violating a condition of release. She is in custody at the Somerset County Jail. Rebekah Rodrigue was arrested Friday on a charge of unauthorized use of property.

The sheriff’s department is reviewing the case with the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office, and additional charges may be coming, according to the release.
