FAIRFIELD — Police are looking for a woman who walked into a church on Skowhegan Road Monday morning and left with about $2,100 in cash.
Fairfield police Sgt. Paul St. Amand said the woman went into the Fairfield United Methodist Church on outer Main Street about 10:20 a.m. and asked to speak to the pastor. When the man at the reception desk left to call the pastor on his cellphone, the money in a paper bank envelope on the desk was stolen, St. Amand said.
“He came back in, she was on her way out and he realized he had left the deposit envelope on the table, which she took on the way out,” St. Amand said.
St. Amand said the woman is described by church officials as black, 5 feet, 10 inches to 6 feet tall and weighing 180-200 pounds. St. Amand said the woman left driving a dark Dodge SUV with a male passenger of unknown race. They don’t know what direction she went in.
St. Amand said a partial license plate number was reported, with the numbers 1 and 2.
Skowhegan police are assisting with the investigation. Other police agencies also are on the lookout for the woman and the SUV.
No one answered the phone at the Methodist church Monday. Pastor Judith Gould could not be reached for comment.
