LIMINGTON – The pilot of a Cessna 172 airplane died when his plane crashed moments after taking off from Limington Airport on Friday afternoon, the York County Sheriff's Office said.

The pilot was identified as Anthony Longley, 58, of Naples.

William King, the chief deputy of the York County Sheriff's Office, said Longley was the only person aboard the four-seat plane. He had a student pilot's license that allowed him to fly, but he was not permitted to take passengers.

According to King, witnesses said Longley's plane took off about 1:30 p.m. and started to gain altitude, but then the engine sputtered and the plane crashed.

The crash occurred beside the runway, King said.

King said the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board began investigating the crash Friday and will continue Saturday.
