KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia — The U.S. men’s biathlon team finished a disappointing 16th in the 4-by-7.5 kilometer relay Saturday at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Maine’s Russell Currier did not fare well in the shooting range. He skied the second leg of the race and took over in fourth place, 17.3 seconds behind the leader, Norway, at the first exchange after Lowell Bailey skied a stellar race, going a 10 for 10 in shooting.

Currier entered the third shooting stage – his prone position – still in fourth. But he hit only 2 of 5 targets (out of eight total shots) and had to ski three penalty laps to fall well behind the leader.
Russia won the gold medal in 1 hour, 12 minutes, 15.9 seconds, followed by Germany (1:12:19.4) and Austria (1:12:45.7).
The U.S. was the last team to finish, in 1:17:39.1. Three teams were lapped and did not count in the standings.
Sean Doherty skied the third leg for the U.S. team and Leif Nordgren the fourth.
This was the final biathlon event of the Olympics.
Norway, which led throughout, finished fourth after its final competitor, Emil Hegle Svendsen, had to ski a penalty lap following the final shooting stage.
In his two previous Olympic races in Sochi, Currier was 61st in the men’s 10k sprint and 50th in the men’s individual 20k.
