PORTLAND — Former Maine AFL-CIO President Edward Gorham will be honored at a dinner Friday.
Hundreds of union members and activists are expected to attend the Eddie Gorham Appreciation Dinner at the Maine Irish Heritage Center. A special segment called "So You Think You Know Eddie?" will be part of the event.
Gorham has been active in the labor movement for four decades. He stepped down as president of Maine AFL-CIO at the end of last year.
After graduating from the University of Maine and serving with the Peace Corps in India, Gorham joined Local 29 of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Shipbuilders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers. When he was laid off from his job at Scott Paper Mill in Hinckley in 1976, he offered his services to the Maine AFL-CIO. He started out as a legislative liaison and then served as secretary-treasurer. He was elected president in 1999.
