Michael Whisman, 50, a subcontractor for Protection 1 Security, was working at Rite Aid on Madison Avenue Thursday when the accident happened, said Skowhegan Police Chief Ted Blais.

A hospital spokesperson said there was no information available about Whisman’s condition on Thursday evening. Blais said he believed that Whisman had a pre-existing heart condition that may have been a factor in the accident. He said police believe he wasn’t feeling well and was coming down the ladder when he passed out and fell.

The accident was reported at 11:42 a.m. and the store was closed for about half an hour. Whisman was initially taken by ambulance to Redington-Fairview General Hospital before being flown to Bangor.

Tammy Kennard, 43, of Skowhegan, said she came into the store shortly after the accident to drop off a prescription and print some photos.

“He was breathing really heavily but his condition didn’t seem that bad. I don’t know what happened but I hope he is okay,” she said.

A manager for Rite Aid said he had no comment on the incident. The Skowhegan Fire Department also responded.
