FAIRFIELD — A local police officer is holding a free self-defense course for women next week in the Lawrence Junior High School gymnasium.

The class will include preventative measures women can take to stay safe, according to Police Officer Shanna Blodgett, who is teaching the class.

The class will also teach hands-on techniques women can use to get away safely if they are attacked, she said.

“This will be our second class we have put on and we had great, positive results with the first class and hope to make this at least an annual class, if not twice a year,” Blodgett said.

All participants must sign a waiver form. Anyone under 18 must have a parent sign the waiver form, according to Blodgett.

The class is 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, June 12. Blodgett asks anyone interested in taking it contact her at shannablodgett@yahoo.com, mark the subject “self defense,” and indicate how many women will attend.
