Richard Letourneau, who received the most votes out of three candidates running for two seats in November, told town officials that he recently got a job that required out-of-state travel that would make it hard for him to attend regular council meetings.

Town Manager Josh Reny said Letorneau thought it would be better to resign than to miss council meetings because of his job.

Reny said the other council members are expected to accept his resignation and will have 30 days to appoint someone to fill the position.

He said the council has the option of appointing someone at the 6 p.m. Thursday meeting at the Fairfield Community Center. Whoever is appointed will serve a one-year term until the next election.

Letourneau, 44, is an employee of Dirigo Engineering working as an inspector on the Summit Natural Gas pipeline. A Lawrence High School graduate, he served in the Army and graduated from the Maine Maritime Academy with a degree in power engineering technology.

In the election, he received 470 votes. Aaron Rowden got 466 votes, and incumbent Harold “Jim” Murray got 384, which left him unseated.
