WINSLOW — Firefighters were called to put out a fire that fully engulfed a vehicle on Clinton Avenue Monday morning.

The fire, reported at 10:17 a.m., was believed to have been caused by a mechanical problem, according to police Lt. Josh Veilleux, who was at the scene. A Winslow woman, whose name police didn’t make available, was returning from Waterville in a Buick Rendezvous sport utility vehicle when the car began acting oddly, Veilleux said.

“She said it felt like it was running out of gas,” he said. “She thought it was strange, but she managed to pull into the driveway and that’s when she noticed it smoking from the engine.”

By the time the woman called for help, the vehicle had burst into flames, Veilleux said.

Police don’t suspect anything suspicious and believe the fire was caused by a mechanical or electrical issue. However, the Winslow Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire, Veilleux said.

No one was injured in the fire.

The Buick SUV was destroyed, police said.
