U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe will be invited by legislative leaders to give a speech to the House and Senate as part of Olympia Snowe Day.

Assistant Senate Minority Leader Roger Katz, R-Augusta, advanced the idea last week and got approval from fellow leaders to extend an invitation to Snowe, a Republican who retired last year after 34 years in public life.

“Her long and distinguished career was characterized by hard work, a dedication to her home state, and a willingness to work across the aisle to move our country forward,” Katz wrote in a memo distributed to legislators. “Senator Snowe represented Maine in Washington longer than anyone else in the last 100 years. She has served as an inspiration to thousands of Mainers, particularly women and girls.”

Katz said he will invite Snowe to address lawmakers. A date has not been set.
