HALLOWELL — A city police cruiser was likely totaled Saturday night when an alleged drunken driver broadsided the vehicle from behind, as the officer was turning left into a Water Street parking lot.

Mary Testerman, 46, of Augusta, was arrested and charged with operating under the influence, after recording a blood-alcohol level of .18, said Hallowell Police Sgt. Christopher Hutchings.

Testerman’s sport-utility vehicle hit the cruiser’s driver’s side, while trying to pass from behind in the other lane as Chris Martinez, a Hallowell police and animal control officer, slowed to turn left into the Cafe de Bangkok parking lot, around 8:10 p.m., Hutchings said.

He said the 2013 Ford Taurus police cruiser had its rear axle twisted and the left doors crushed, likely totaling it. Neither driver was hurt.

“It’s really kind of an unfortunate thing that it happened,” Hutchings said. “It’s like I told Officer Martinez that night, for such a bad situation, this is probably the best outcome, that no one was hurt.”
