BURNHAM -- Police report that a 58-year-old man and 27-year-old woman are being treated at area hospitals for serious but what appear to be non-life threatening injuries after the helicopter they were in crashed Wednesday night.
The two were were searching for bears in the heavily wooded area about a quarter mile from Winnecook Road when the helicopter had technical problems, according to a press release from the Waldo County Sheriff's Office on Thursday.
The woman is a student at Unity College and pilot is from Bowdoinham, but the office did not release their names, other information about them or the hospitals where they are being treated.
The helicopter, a Schweizer 300C, crashed about a quarter mile from the road and the woman made it out of the woods for help, according to the press release.
Burnham Fire Department, Clinton Fire Department and Rescue and Unity Ambulance responded to the scene. Each subject was transferred for medical attention. The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and will conduct an investigation, according to the release.
