Driver in Benton interstate accident hospitalized; four passengers treated, released

BENTON — The driver in a one-car accident on Interstate 95 on Monday night is in stable condition, according to state police.

Nathan Manning-Harris, 28, of Easton, was northbound near Exit 133 when the 2002 Pontiac he was driving left the road around 7:02 p.m., according to Sgt. Aaron Hayden of the Maine State Police.

Manning-Harris was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center by LifeFlight of Maine helicopter.

Four passengers were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected during the crash, according to police. They were taken by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer campus in Waterville for treatment and released, said hospital spokeswoman Sarah Webster on Tuesday.

The four, all from Aroostook County, are the car’s owner, Rocky Hill, 25; Shelagh Gates, 34; Bennett Gahagan, 25; and Alberto Vasquez, 34.

The north lane was closed for about an hour and a half between exits 133 and 136 and reopened about 8:40 p.m., according to police.

Previous reports erroneously stated that the both lanes of traffic were closed, and misidentified the town where the accident occurred.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. It took place near an area of the highway that is currently under construction.
