In Hallowell, freshman councilor resigns less than a year into term

HALLOWELL — A city councilor has resigned less than a year into his first term.

Jed Wartman, who represents Ward 1 in the city’s northwest and also works as director of campus life at Colby College, said he’ll be moving to a residence on the Waterville school’s campus. He was elected in 2012 and chaired the city’s Park and Recreation Commission, saying the panel’s work has been the most enjoyable piece of his tenure.

Mayor-elect Mark Walker, also a councilor, said Wartman’s resignation has long been expected, as Wartman has had his Lincoln Street home on the market for a long time.

Hallowell’s city charter says when a councilor resigns, the mayor selects a replacement to hold the office until the next municipal election, which would be in November 2014. The choice is subject to the council’s approval. Walker, who ran unopposed to replace outgoing mayor Charlotte Warren on the November ballot, takes office in early January, along with the new city council.

At the inauguration, Walker said he’ll announce his selection for Wartman’s seat and is considering a few people: Some he reached out to and others who contacted him with interest.
