The Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting has hired a former executive at MaineShare, a nonprofit that helps distribute funding to various state organizations, as its chief operating officer.
Hildie J. Lipson, of Wayne, served for eight years as MaineShare's executive director and another eight as its campaign coordinator.
Lipson will be responsible for the business and fundraising operations of the nonprofit journalism outfit, according to a news release from the center. Publisher John Christie and Executive Director Naomi Schalit will continue to be the chief writers and make all editorial decisions.
"Our organization is four years old and growing, and we find we need to have an experienced nonprofit executive oversee the business side of the center," Christie said in the release. "That will allow the center to continue to work on sustaining itself and also devote more effort to journalism."
Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting has published more than 150 stories since its founding in late 2009. Stories are distributed to around 25 media partners in the state and published on the center's website.
Its revenue primarily comes from journalism foundations and private donors, according to the release.
