MaineToday Media announced this week that Susan Cover has been promoted to city editor of the Kennebec Journal in Augusta and Scott Monroe has been promoted to managing editor of the both the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel in Waterville.

In addition, Cindy Stevens has been hired as regional advertising director and will oversee advertising sales and operations for the two newspapers.

MaineToday Media publishes the Morning Sentinel and Kennebec Journal, as well as the Portland Press Herald, Coastal Journal and associated websites.

Both Monroe and Cover have been serving in the roles on an interim basis for the last six months, and were appointed to the posts by Executive Editor Cliff Schechtman.

Cover, 42, is a graduate of Muskingum University in Ohio and has a master’s degree in newspaper journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. She has worked at newspapers in Kansas, Rhode Island, Ohio and Maine, dating back to 1994. Cover covered state government and politics for the Kennebec Journal from 2002 until 2012 before coming back to the newsroom to cover local government. She has covered several referenda and candidate campaigns, including bear baiting in 2004, the 2010 governor’s race and gay marriage in 2009 and 2012.

Monroe, 31, had previously been the Kennebec Journal’s city editor and now oversees all reporters and editors at the central Maine newspapers. He is a graduate of Johnson State College in Vermont and has a bachelor’s degree in creative writing. Monroe started working for the Morning Sentinel as a reporter in 2008.

As city editor, Cover said she hopes to continue the Kennebec Journal’s tradition of providing compelling coverage of local issues that affect those living in the Augusta area. Monroe said he’s focused on producing probing, enterprise journalism for the central Maine newspapers and websites, and offering readers more opportunities to experience that work through video, interactive projects and more.

Stevens, 56, has a master’s of business administration degree in marketing and management from Thomas College in Waterville. She returns to the newspapers after a three-year hiatus, during which she obtained her real estate license. Stevens started in ad sales at the Morning Sentinel in 1976 and later was appointed advertising manager of both papers.

Stevens said she looks forward to reconnecting with businesses and customers, and assisting them with growing their businesses.
