Lawyers offer free advice at library Law Day 2013

STAFF REPORT

FARMINGTON — Local lawyers will be offering free legal advice today from noon to 2 p.m. at the Farmington Public Library.

As part of Lawyers in Libraries: Law Day 2013, lawyers across the state will provide free legal resources and assistance at 36 public libraries for people in need.

Ed David, Walter Hanstein and Kevin Joyce, with the Joyce, David and Hanstein law firm, will provide information about free resources, low-cost legal assistance and legal referrals at the library on Academy Street.

The event’s two goals are to provide Maine citizens with access to legal information and to demonstrate how legal access is critical to a community’s well-being, according to a news release from the law firm.

An entire community suffers when neighbors and friends go through foreclosure, are not safe in their homes or cannot afford heat or food, the firm said in the release.

Organizers of the series include the Maine Justice Action Group Collaboration on Innovation, the Maine State Bar Association, Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Maine’s public libraries, the Volunteer Lawyers Project and the State of Maine Judicial Branch.

The names and locations of participating libraries are listed at www.lawyersinlibraries.org.
