From staff reports
AUGUSTA — Paul LePage, the Republican gubernatorial nominee, apologized to Libby Mitchell, his Democratic opponent, this morning on the George Hale/Ric Tyler show on WVOM for a joke he made over the weekend about Mitchell's age.
"If Elizabeth is offended by it, my deepest apologies, because it was certainly never meant to offend her," LePage said on air. "She's worked very hard and she's had a good career and I just think that the issues should be brought up. My differences with Elizabeth Mitchell is on the policies."
LePage, 61, had made a joke about the fact that Mitchell had just turned 70 during a campaign and fundraising stop in Bath on Saturday. The comment upset members of the Maine chapter of the AARP.
On Tuesday morning, in an on-air conversation with Hale, LePage admitted to making the joke while criticizing media coverage of the comment.
“The fact of the matter is, yes, I made a joke about being 70, and then I went on to say she that she is a very formidable candidate,” LePage said of comments he made during a follow-up interview with a Maine Public Broadcasting Network reporter.
He complained that the MPBN reporter did not include his compliments to Mitchell in her coverage.
In an MPBN transcript of the follow-up interview provided to the Kennebec Journal, LePage said he did not think age should be a campaign issue. The transcript did not show comments from him praising Mitchell as a candidate.
Hale said this type of thing happens a lot in political campaigns.
“How do we keep this above board, how do we keep this straight?” Hale asked.
“Well, from now on, what I am going to do is, I’m not going to make any comments to reporters unless it’s in writing,” LePage said.
Hale asked, “Really?”
“Yeah,” LePage said. “Because they won’t report what you say, they just report the spin that they want to put on it.”

Did Lepage actually say "My differences with Elizabeth Mitchell is on the policies."??? Wouldn't that kind of flagrant grammatical error (subject/verb agreement: differences ARE, not differences is) cause Tea Party folks to DEMAND that anyone else learn to speak English correctly? Or is that sort of DEMAND only reserved for those with Hispanic accents? Maybe we should ask for proof he actually earned a college degree as he claims?

An age jab by a 61 year old man about a 70 year old woman is like the pot calling the kettle black. He apologized. Now move on. The biggest issue here wasn't the comment but LePage's propensity to speak or act without thinking first. Like the Waterville Council meeting about Medicinal Marijuana and the pose on the front page with a bar owner who's bar was recently raided by police. We need a Governor who is thoughtful and focuses on real solutions about REAL issues.

In fact if you were to take actual age in years in conjunction with all of the weight and over imbibing issues that Lepage is VERY well known for, his effective age is almost certainly greater than Mitchell's. Any competent insurance actuary would rate Mitchell's longevity and likelihood of good health quite a bit higher that that of a very hard drinking, overweight heart attack survivor like Lepage.

It is a typical POLITICAL apology, not a Republican one alone. No politician has the cohones, (sorry that's not English) to accept responsibility for their actions. Lepage is no different just because he does it with a french accent.

Republicans tend to box themselves in by promoting a "Family Values" platform. In truth they are human beings like everyone else and have the same shortcomings. "Family Values" don't belong in any politician's platform. But LePage has spoken to those values and the Republican platform stresses them. So when he poses with a person of questionable character or has other questions raised about his character on other websites he is boxed in and should either admit or repudiate the questions. Republicans who stress "Family or Traditional values" and don't live them themselves are the lowest form of political creature, HYPOCRITES!!

Paul LePage should have recorded the apology to save time. There is no doubt he will be putting his foot in his mouth many times during the upcoming fall election campaign. To make things easier on himself maybe he should publish his plan for getting the State of Maine back on track. That way he can have it proof read first. Maybe then the rest of us non right wing Tea Party nut jobs can find out what he really brings to the table. Who knows he may garner some votes he wasn't counting on.

I just heard that Harry Reid's new energy bill does NOT mandate that we buy renewable electricity. God Bless! How about we now get Maine to withdraw from RGGI which makes Mainers buy renewable energy given that Governor Baldacci doesn't feel hydro power is renewable. What's that stuff every time it rains and snows Governor Baldacci? How about we buy the energy we want without the government telling us what we must buy and without the government subsidizing the renewable sources that essentially don't work. Give me hydro. Give me natural gas. Give me a new Governor who understands what it's like being in the poor house, which is where 16 long destructive years of Baldacci and King have taken us.

Then we can get them to apologize for not ever going to salute the war dead returning from Iraq, a war that he and Republicans LIED America into for oil! Then we can get the last Republican Governor of Maine, Jock McKernon, to "apologize" for so screwing up the budget that it took Angus King's entire first term just to straighten it out! Then, while we're at it, let's get Republicans to APOLOGIZE for doing NOTHING while insurance rates rose 200% in the 12 years they held Congress since 1995! Then also, let's get ignorant people like YOU, No Spin, to apologize for turning politics into a WWF event. So "No Spin," get contrite, you have a LOT to be sorry for, Mr. Brave RepubliCON!
