LePage issues proclamation on MLK Day

AUGUSTA — Maine Gov. Paul LePage is proclaiming Monday to be the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

LePage on Sunday said King is being remembered for his dedication and work aimed at ensuring civil rights for all Americans.

In his proclamation, the governor says the Martin Luther King holiday was designated as a national day of volunteer service when it was enacted in 1994. He says it's the only federal holiday commemorated as a national day of service.

The proclamation calls on Mainers to pay tribute to King's life and work by participating in community service projects on Monday and throughout the year.
