WILTON — A Lewiston woman died while being taken to the hospital following a two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon.
Police are still investigating the cause of the accident that totaled both vehicles and left four additional people injured, said Wilton Police Chief Heidi Wilcox in a news release.
The woman, Claudette Hutchins, 61, was driving west on U.S. Route 2 around 2:45 p.m., with two passengers, who were both injured in the accident, Wilcox said.
Passengers Claire Bergeron, 63, also of Lewiston, and a 16-year-old girl were both taken to Franklin Memorial hospital by Northstar Ambulance. Hutchins died en route to Franklin Memorial Hospital.
Wilcox said the other vehicle involved in the accident was a van driven by Richard Harvey, 79, heading east on U.S. 2. Harvey was brought to Maine Medical Center in Lewiston by LifeFlight helicopter.
His passenger, Angela Harvey, 80, of Farmington, was brought to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.
The Jay Fire Department established a landing zone on U.S. 2 at the weigh station near Big Apple for the helicopter to land.
Both Hutchins’ 2010 Hyundai SUV and Harvey’s 2013 Town and Country van were destroyed in the accident, said Wilcox.
The cause of the crash is being investigated by Officer Derek Daley and Sgt. Chad Abbott of the Wilton Police Department. Wilton, East Dixfield and Farmington fire departments and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department also assisted at the accident.
