CARRABASSETT VALLEY — More than 100 men and women are taking part in cross country ski races in western Maine for Maine Huts and Trails' fifth annual Ski Marathon and Tour.
Sunday's event features three race distances of 20, 40 and 60 kilometers.
The races begin in the wilderness north of Carrabassett Valley and end at the Sugarloaf Outdoors Center. Awards and prizes go to the top three men and women in each race.
Maine Huts and Trails is a nonprofit that's developing a backcountry network of huts along 180 miles of trails in western Maine. The long-term aim is to build 12 overnight shelters along trails stretching from near New Hampshire to the Moosehead Lake region.
So far, the organization has built four huts and created 80 miles of trails.
