Maine applies for Race to Top funds

AUGUSTA — Maine is applying for up to $75 million in education funds through the federal Race to the Top program.

The state Department of Education says Maine's application arrived at the U.S. Department of Education on Tuesday. It culminated months of work collecting data and organizing the state's plan for education and education reform.

The state hopes to win a share of the $4 billion available through the program. Maine could receive up to $75 million over four years for efforts to improve data systems, improve teaching and learning, turn around low-achieving schools and improve the state's standards and assessments. Winners will be announced in August or September.

Eighty-two school districts, representing nearly three-quarters of the students in the state, have signaled their intent to participate in the program.
