From staff and news service reports
Rep. Mike Michaud, D-Maine, says he supports the health care overhaul plan.
"While the bill is not perfect, it is an important first step toward fixing our broken and unsustainable health care system," he says
Michaud's decision Sunday to support the bill came two days after Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, announced that she also was supporting the health care overhaul.
Michaud said he thoroughly reviewed the bill's language. He calls it "a vast improvement to the status quo of skyrocketing premiums that millions of families and small businesses currently face."
Pingree addressed the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for two minutes Sunday night, urging her colleages to support reform of the nation's health care system.
Pingree, who will vote in support of health care reform, said a small business owner, a married couple and a cardiac patient, all from Maine, wrote to her to say that they could no longer afford the costs of health care insurance.
Her constituents told Pingree that Anthem's proposed 23 percent rate increase would make it impossible to provide health insurance for employees, that their income was not high enough to cover the cost of co-pays and prescription medicine, and that in the case of the heart patient he lost everything because he was out of work.
"Those people wrote to me from Maine, but the stories are told every day in every state – Americans are denied insurance, have their coverage canceled or find themselves bankrupt just because they got sick," Pingree said. "Today we will change that with our vote. Today our vote will start to end the worst practices of the insurance companies, like denying coverage for pre-existing conditions or canceling your policy when you get sick."

Sigh. Sorry to repeat myself, but it is necessary to counter repeated lies posted here: The law that outlines the use of reconciliation is The Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974. It dictates that the Senate may restrict debate to 10 hours (thus eliminating filibuster by a minority) on any bill that rescinds budget authority "in whole or in part". To repeat for emphasis: the controlling law clearly and explicitly states that this process may be used for ANY bill that "in whole or in part" rescinds the president's budgetary authority. Since the proposed revisions to the health care reform bill do in fact rescind some level of presidential budgetary authority, it absolutely falls within this law. Whining by Republicans who have been the party using reconciliation over 77% of the times it has been used, is pure partisan spin aimed at deception.

The bill controlling reconciliation has plain language that makes it 100% clear that it is entirely legal to use it in this case. Senator Byrd is still a Senator and has agreed that it is indeed appropriate to use it. In the case of the Clinton bill it was not appropriate because that bill did not rescind the president's budgetary authority in whole or in part.

Do you really expect me to believe that you would rather stifle you business just so you can keep your employees in healthcare ins? Oh, BTW, you're not the only business waiting out the uncertainty. It's more the norm right now. Gee, I hope I don't ever hear about you dropping the employees healthcare ins, or reducing the work force, just because the penalty for not supplying employee health is less expensive than paying the premiums
