AUGUSTA — Maine’s lawmakers are attempting to find ways to address the challenges caused by Maine’s graying population.
Democratic House Speaker Mark Eves of North Berwick is holding a discussion with lawmakers, health care officials and economists on Tuesday to come up with policy recommendations regarding the aging population. The group will meet four times this fall.
The group will hear from experts including Charlie Colgan, a professor at the University of Southern Maine’s Muskie School of Public Service.
The number of Maine residents over age 44 increased by 122,600 between 2000 and 2010, while the number under age 45 decreased by 69,100, according to Census data. The state’s Labor Department recently released a report that says more people will retire and fewer will enter the labor force in coming years.
