Maine hospital releases skier who survived wilds

FARMINGTON — A 17-year-old boy who was found alive and well after going missing for two nights near a ski resort has been discharged from the hospital.

A spokeswoman for Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington says Nicholas Joy of Medford, Mass., was released at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Spokeswoman Jill Gray could not give any further details.

It was unclear Wednesday morning whether Joy had actually left the hospital by 11:15 a.m., but he had been medically released.

Joy got lost on the back side of Sugarloaf Mountain after skiing with his father Sunday. After an extensive search involving 85 people, Joy was found Tuesday morning on an access road by a snowmobiler who went out looking for him.

The teenager built a shelter fashioned out of snow and hemlock branches and drank from stream water while looking for help. Rescuers say Joy used his head and was in remarkably good shape.
