More Maine Guard
soldiers going to Afghanistan

The Associated Press

ORONO — More Maine National Guard soldiers are headed to Afghanistan.

The Guard says there will be a deployment ceremony Saturday for about 175 members of the 1136th Transportation Company. The unit is stationed in Bangor, Calais and Sanford. The ceremony is scheduled for the Collins Center for the Arts at the University of Maine in Orono.

The company's soldiers will conduct force protection operations by providing base security for bases in Afghanistan.

In 2003 the 1136th Transportation Company went to Kuwait as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Meanwhile, about 150 Maine National Guard members are arriving in Afghanistan as part of the 86th Brigade Combat team, which draws soldiers from across New England.
