Cruiser posted to ease synagogue traffic
WATERVILLE — A Waterville police cruiser stationed at the Beth Israel Congregation during services on Thursday marking the start of the Jewish New Year was not there in response to a specific threat or safety concern, officials said.
Rather, the presence of a police officer was requested to oversee traffic at the Main Street synagogue, said Deborah Marlowe. Many cars lined the street as local Jewish people attended services for Rosh Hashanah.
Police Chief Joseph Massey said his department received traffic complaints from neighbors a couple weeks ago, so it made sense for police to be there.
“It’s kind of twofold: traffic control to appease neighbors and providing a general sense of security during holy days,” Massey said.
