A Topsham man is expected to survive injuries he suffered Monday when he was thrown from his motorcycle on Interstate 295 and run over by a Jeep Wrangler.

Adam Towers, 42, passed the Jeep on I-295 southbound in Falmouth and was moving back into the travel lane when he lost control of the 2013 Harley-Davidson motorcycle without making contact with any other vehicle, said state Trooper Douglas Cropper.

Towers tumbled on the highway, Cropper said. “The woman in the Jeep Wrangler attempted to go around and actually ran over him,” he said. “His injuries are road rash, skin abrasion and a broken pelvis.”

Cropper said Towers was “very lucky” that his injuries were “not life-threatening.” Towers was not wearing a helmet on I-295, which has a 65-mph speed limit.

The driver of the Jeep, Cynthia Palmieri, 62, of Oakland, was not charged. She was credited by police for acting quickly to avoid hitting Towers more directly.

“She tried to swerve to avoid him. If she didn’t swerve, she would have hit him head on,” Cropper said. “She would rather, she said, hit a car to her left than hit him.”

Towers was conscious and alert before being taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, Cropper said.

The accident caused traffic delays on the highway for hours, leaving only one southbound lane open until around 1:30 p.m.
