Newly elected NH lawmaker resigns after felony report

Stacie Laughton, who claimed to be the first transgendered person elected to a state legislature, quit after a news report that she was convicted of a felony while living as a man in Laconia.

NASHUA, N.H. — A newly elected Nashua Democrat has decided to resign her seat in the New Hampshire legislature after media reports about a prior felony conviction.

Stacie Laughton, who claims to be the first transgendered person elected to a state legislature, won the seat this month. But recently, the Laconia Daily Sun reported Laughton was convicted of a felony while living as a man in Laconia.

Felons can vote and hold office in New Hampshire if they have completed their sentences. WMUR-TV  reported Tuesday that Laughton's sentence included 10 years of good behavior, which started four years ago.

Laughton said when she ran she thought she was eligible to serve but has decided to resign after the press attention.
