OAKLAND — A man who police said knocked a pit bull unconscious and then assaulted a woman he lives with is facing multiple charges.

The man, Corey Wayne Hall, 28, of High Street, was arrested Friday night on charges of domestic assault, cruelty to animals and obstructing the report of a crime, according to Capt. Rick Stubbert of the Oakland Police Department.

Stubbert said police responded to a call for help from inside the house about 11 p.m. and arrested Hall after learning that he had beaten one of the two pit bulls in the home.

Stubbert said there was no indication that the dog had acted aggressively or provoked Hall in any way before Hall threw it against a wall.

“The dog was actually knocked unconscious,” he said.

The assault against the woman involved physical contact, but no weapons, and left her with minor injuries, Stubbert said.

People usually are charged with obstructing the report of a crime because they try to prevent the police from being called, Stubbert said, although he would not say what led to the charge in Hall’s case.

Police took Hall to the Kennebec County jail.

Each of the three charges carries a penalty of up to 364 days in jail and a $2,000 fine under Maine’s criminal law.

The dog regained consciousness and didn’t seem to be suffering any injuries, Stubbert said.

While it was left in the home, Stubbert said, it won’t be living with Hall, because he is prohibited from entering the residence.
