READFIELD — One person was killed and another injured in a single-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon, at the intersection of P Ridge and Lane roads.

State police Trooper Dane Wing late Saturday could not release the name of the deceased or the injured person in the 5:34 p.m. accident. Radio reports heard over a scanner indicated one person was walking around the scene when emergency crews arrived, and later radio reports indicated that person was being transported to a Lewiston hospital.

The vehicle, which was leaning against a tree near the intersection and covered with a tarp, was also unidentified by Wing, who said the deceased and injured person were the only occupants.

Wing said additional details were unavailable, citing the continuing investigation. Maine State Police are expected to make a statement Sunday providing additional details about the accident.

Emergency crews quickly closed off surrounding roads and kept bystanders several hundred yards away from the scene. The area is rural, with few houses in the vicinity.

Reconstructionists were seen marking the pavement on the Lane Road. State police, the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, and Readfield and Winthrop fire department and rescue crews responded to the scene.
