Troy man survives self-inflicted gunshot wound, will face charges

TROY— Maine State Police reported today that the man who shot himself at his home yesterday in Troy is Raymond Carson, 71.

Maine State Police troopers and detectives converged at a residence on Barker Road in Troy on Wednesday. Police said a man shot himself at his home as he was about to be arrested for child sexual charges.

He was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with a gunshot wound to his chest, according to Steve McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

Carson underwent surgery Wednesday night and is expected to survive, McCausland said in a news release.

Detectives went to Carson’s house Wednesday to arrest him on child sexual abuse charges involving a young girl, according to McCausland. They searched the house last week and seized evidence related to the investigation, he said.

McCausland said Carson shot himself after he would not answer the door when detectives arrived to arrest him, they then called for assistance from the state police tactical team, which surrounded the house. Police fired no shots, he said.

Once he recovers, Carson will be charged with sexual exploitation of a minor, as well as furnishing liquor and providing a place for a minor to consume alcohol, according to McCausland.
