Police: Van crossed center line in Wilton fatal crash

Police are still investigating what caused a van to veer out of its lane and hit an SUV head-on, leaving four injured and destroying both vehicles.

Staff Report

WILTON — Police have determined that a Chrysler Town and Country van crossed the center line on U.S. Route 2 Friday, causing the accident that killed a Lewiston woman and left four others injured.

Claudette Hutchins, 61, of Lewiston, was killed when the SUV she was driving was hit head on by the van. Four others, from both vehicles, were hospitalized following the Friday afternoon accident and both vehicles were destroyed.

Police are still investigating what caused the van to cross into the other lane, Sgt. Chad Abbot of the Wilton Police Department said Monday.

Hutchins was driving west with two passengers when their SUV was hit.

She and her two passengers, a 16-year-old girl and 63-year-old Claire Bergeron, were taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. Hutchins died en route.

The driver of the van, Richard Harvey, 79, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston by LifeFlight helicopter.

His passenger, Angela Harvey, 80, of Farmington, was brought to Franklin Memorial Hospital.

Hospital officials will not release information on the patients’ conditions, citing family wishes.
