PORTLAND — City officials have identified the man who apparently drowned Friday night while swimming in the Fore River.

Nicole Clegg, spokeswoman for the city of Portland, identified the victim as 49-year-old Patrick Flynn of Portland.

An examination of Flynn’s body by the state Medical Examiner’s Office had not been completed as of Sunday.

Authorities said Flynn and his girlfriend were swimming around 5:30 p.m. off a point of land underneath the South Portland side of the Casco Bay Bay Bridge when a strong current apparently swept him away. Other swimmers were able to help his girlfriend get to shore.

A Coast Guard vessel and Portland’s fireboat searched for Flynn and found him about 30 minutes later. The fireboat crew performed CPR on Flynn and he was taken to Maine Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
