Portland ocean plunge helps burn victims

PORTLAND — Portland firefighters are raising money for burn victims by braving icy ocean waters at the city's East End Beach.

On Sunday, the Portland Firefighters Burn Foundation, Portland Fire Department and community volunteers took part in the early morning Paddy Plunge.

The plunge is now in its 12th year and raises money for burn survivors and their families, prevents burn injuries through education and training, and promotes the education of fire and medical professionals throughout Maine about burn injuries and recovery. Last year's event raised more than $20,000.

Participants gather pledges of support and make their plunge into the ocean at dawn.
