Retired Army lieutenant colonel announces candidacy for state representative

Alan Tibbetts, 56, of Sidney, said he will run for the Democratic nomination against incumbent Bob Nutting of Oakland.

Staff Report

A retired Army lieutenant colonel has announced his candidacy for state representative in District 77, which includes Sidney and most of Oakland.

Alan Tibbetts, 56, of Sidney, said he will run for the Democratic nomination against incumbent Bob Nutting of Oakland, who recently registered for his 8th term.

Tibbets said in a press release that he is running as a “common sense voice” and plans to advocate for living wages, health care that is both affordable and ethical and personal privacy.

Tibbets grew up the son of a logger and school teacher in Eustis and graduated from the University of Maine with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

After serving on active duty, Tibbets returned to Maine and joined the National Guard. He was in command of units that provided assistance to Maine towns during the 1987 flood and again during the 1998 ice storm. After 33 years of service, Tibbets retired from the Guard as a lieutenant colonel in 2013.

He and his wife, Kathy, and their two children, Heidi and Brian, have lived in Sidney for 18 years.
