Ripley voters give go-ahead, seed money to repair former school

By Brenda Seekins, Correspondent

RIPLEY — Voters opted Saturday to raise $5,100 to begin renovations on Corson Memorial School, the town’s former elementary school building, which the school district returned to the town. The money will help replace the building’s heating system.

The decision occurred as part of Ripley’s annual Town Meeting, in which voters took about two hours to dispense with 36 articles.

“It went through pretty much as expected,” said Town Clerk Vernal Sinclair, who was re-elected to the post he has held since 1995. Voters also re-elected Michael Mower as selectman.

There were no major changes to the proposed $271,000 municipal budget, and the tax rate of $17 per $1,000 of valuation is expected to remain the same. However, Sinclair cautioned that the tax rate can’t be set until town officials know what will happen to state revenue sharing, the local school assessment and the county tax.
