AUGUSTA — The Salvation Army units of Waterville and Augusta are being merged into the Capitol Area Corps beginning July 1.
According to a press release from The Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters in Portland, the move will better serve the two communities.

The new corps community center will be based at the current location of the Augusta Corps, 11 North Pearl St.
The Salvation Army will serve residents of Waterville at a new downtown location to be determined, but it will no longer administer programs from the 225 Main St. building.
The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Waterville will remain open.
Majors David and Karin Dickson, who command the Waterville Corps, will be moving to Augusta and will be joined by Lt. Erin Smullen, the commanding officer of The Salvation Army Corps in Berlin, N.H.
The merger results from “changing community needs, deteriorating facilities and increased operating expenses in Waterville,” according to the press release.
According to Maj. James LaBossiere, Northern New England Division divisional commander, “The reduction of facility expenses will allow us to give an even greater focus on the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of local residents.”
No interruption of services is expected during the transition.
The Salvation Army has been in Waterville and Augusta since 1885.
